Trent Woods was incorporated in 1958 but did not begin operating like a town until it was threatened to lose it's charter. In order to become a town, it had to hold elections, have town meetings and a government. With the encouragement of George Scott, who was afraid that New Bern would take over and charge city taxes, Trent Woods became a town in 1972. The boundaries of Trent Woods are River Road (including Hawood Creek Landing but excluding Haywood Farms), Trent Woods Drive, Country Club Road (including Trent Shores but excluding Old Town), Highland Avenue and Chelsea Road. The main roads are maintained by the Department of Transportation; but there are some county and private ones also. Jimmy's Creek, Haywood Creek, and Wilson Creek offer picturesque creek front setting while the Trent Tiver has gorgeious waterfront views. There are many subdivisions within Trent Woods. Fox Hollow and Country Club Hills were annexed in the early 90's. Trent Woods packs a lot into its 4 square mile area. There were 4,192 people in the 2000 census. There are 4 churches, a town building, a garden club, a police and fire station, an elementary school, a town park and two pricate clubs. The police work was contracted out until the mid 70's when a full time police chief was hired. Now Trent Woods has 4 full time and one part time policeman, 3 office staff and 2 maintenance employees. The fire station, which started in 1978 is actually a volunteer branch of the Craven County fire department. The $.03 fire tax is paid as a part of the resident's county tax bill. Children in Trent Woods are educated by two elementary schools. Bangert is located within Trent Woods while Ben Quinn is located on Hwy. 17 South. Chelsea Road is the dividing line between the two districts. Meadows Park was donated to Trent Woods, but the town maintains it. $50,000 has been spent recently on new playground equipment and a fence. Riding through Trent Woods, you can see many people enjoying this park. The two pricate clubs in Trent Woods are the New Bern Golf Club & Country Club and the East Carolina Yacht Club. Both clubhouses overlook the Trent River. The Country Club has 700 members and offers an 18 hole golf course, 6 tennis courts, a fitness room and a pool. Owners are advised that if they do no hook up to sewer to decommission their septic tank. That is to pump it out, punch holes in the top and fill it with sand. This will keep the yard safer and will also avoid having empty tanks pop up in times of high water.
Fees can be paid to the city of New Bern. Twelce equal payments with no interest can be made. The contract is through November, and the project seems to be on schedule.
